Beautiful Women Are Enhancing Nation's Image 06 Mar 2013 Weird & Wonderful | 7 comments

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but Myanmar is beholden to no one when it comes to the attractiveness of its women.

An Online Winner

Last year, Myanmar beauty queen Nang Khin Zay Yar (who is also a law school graduate) scooped the Miss Internet Award at the Miss International Beauty Pageant, held in Japan.

This is the fourth biggest world-wide beauty pageant (after Miss Universe, Miss World, and Miss Earth contests) in terms of the numbers of nations holding preliminary competitions to qualify for the finals. The show was born in California (USA) in 1960 but Japan has hosted the event since 1973 as part of a global goodwill campaign.

A Pa'O Representative

Nan Khin Zay Yar is a member of the Pa'O ethnic group from Shan State, one of dozens of ethnic minorities throughout Myanmar (Burma). Her ancestry in the land goes back perhaps 3,000 years when Pa'O descendants first moved into the area.

Her success in the pageant helped put Myanmar (Burma) back on the map. For 50 years, there had been no Myanmar representative at the show, but she made up for this in style by winning 20 million independent votes, an astounding return to the frontline of beauty for Myanmar and a refreshing jolt of positive public relations for the country.

New Images for a New Myanmar

In a region of the world renowned for winsome female beauty, Myanmar's women have been overlooked. This is largely because of the world media's focus on the country's political conflicts and deadly fighting. Myanmar's voluntary withdrawal from the world in recent decades added to the blackout of good news. The result of the coverage and lack of coverage was a one-sided image of a country and its people.

Consequently, if a citizen of the world were asked to describe someone from Myanmar, too many would describe an army general or a bedraggled poor person. A person like Nang Khin Zay Yar,  posed on the cover of a magazine or walking a catwalk in high fashion, would never come to mind. Beware of stereotypes!

Fresh and Allluring

While the people of every country are beautiful in their own way, Myanmar's population is special, partly because the people are an unknown quantity to so much of the world. In respect to Myanmar's women, there is something fresh and alluring about them. Some of it has to do with the country's location in the region.

To the east are the oft-praised goddesses of Thailand... to the west are darker-skinned Bollywood beauties of India...to the north are the alluring women in the exotic Chinese civilization. The women of Myanmar include all these qualities in addition to the intriguing Tibetan heritage of the Burmese people. Add to all that a naturally welcoming and humble nature and the beauty of the women of Myanmar is enigmatic and potent.

So the world is seeing a new, fresh face of Myanmar. It is a captivating and enduring image. With one flash of a smile like Nang Khin Zay Yar's, realization will come that there may be no feminine beauty to be found quite like that of a Myanmar woman.

Also don't forget the powerhouse political leader Aung San Suu Kyi who as well as being highly intelligent has femininity, poise and charm. This just goes to show that in all areas Myanmar has enormous potential and it's certain we will see it well represented in future years on the global stage.

imagine when women get fully exposed to modern fashion & cosmetics, the secrets of untold beauty will get out, make up does wonders to almost any women, but if gets combined with a nation that's naturally exotic, beautiful and with history of makeup (thanaka), the genie is com'in out of the bottle!

shes pretty, not sure runway in paris type of intl level tho, to go global the bar is a lot higher than this. look at china 1.2 billion people, so have crazy outliers, super models that any Asian must compete with for a catwalk opp. She's very pretty though and yes go girls!! Get discovered!
