A visit to the Ananda Temple is highly recommended. It was built by King Kyaansittha in 1091 AD and is believed to the most artistic structure in all of Bagan. It is situated just before the wall of Old Bagan but you can see its shimmering golden top from miles away.

The Shwezigon Pagoda is one of the most sacred buildings in Myanmar (Burma) and served as a prototype for later stupas. It has been said that the king built it to enshrine relics such as a bone and a tooth of Gautama Buddha.

Thatbyinnyu Temple is the highest in Bagan at 61 meters and it literally towers over all the other temples. It is one of the earliest examples of two-story temples in Myanmar. “Thatbyinnyu” means omniscience in Burmese and the temple gets its name from the “omniscience of the Buddha.”

Hot air balloon rides over Bagan are available for the best views of the temples and pagodas. Flights typically take place at sunset or sunrise, making it a truly memorable event. Speaking of sunsets, Bagan is known for them. They are beautiful and are known to produce orange and gold hues as the sun sets behind the thousands of temples dotted as far as the eye can see.

Traveling by horse and cart is the way to see Bagan. Trekking from ruin to ruin requires traipsing through sand and soft dirt, which is exhausting and inconvenient for the average tourist, but no problem for a horse. It is a cooler, more relaxing alternative to riding a bike around the temples. What’s more, you’ll be helping out the locals and getting your very own tour guide.

Mount Popa is an extinct volcano created from a violent volcanic eruption, which dates back to 442 BC. Nearby Taung Kalat is one of the most popular pilgrimage spots in Myanmar  for it is regarded as the home of Myanmar’s powerful Nats. For 700 years every king had to make a pilgrimage here to consult the spirits before his reign could begin.

Bagan was the heart of Myanmar in ancient times; it is thus rich in history and beauty. What’s more, among all the cities in Myanmar, it can be explored all year round because Bagan does not experience a rainy season!
