The Daingnet All Regions People & Tribes | 0 comments

Different but somehow still the same. The Daingnet offer a warm welcome to the weary traveler.
The Daingnet

Physically, the Daingnet people are completely indistinguishable from their Rakhine neighbors. The difference comes at a linguistic and cultural level. The Daingnet speak the Chakma language (though many are multilingual and can also speak Rakhine, Burmese and Chattagonian, which is a Bengali dialect). There are 40,000 Daingnet in Myanmar (Burma) and most of them can be found near Mrauk U and nearby villages and towns. The rest dwell in the hills and mountains near the Chin state.

Religion

Like the Rakhine, the Daingnet are strict Buddhists of the Theravada tradition. However, their close cultural ties with the Chakma people in India and Bangladesh have led to a certain infusion of Hinduism into the Daingnet beliefs. The cow is considered sacred in Daingnet villages and beef is usually not considered appropriate for the table. Their strict interpretation of Buddhism means that they will not become fishermen or butchers. This does not mean they do not eat meat or fish but that this work must be carried out by someone from another tribe.

Culture

The Daingnet are a farming people and are very much at the mercy of the weather. There is very little economic development in Daingnet regions and only a few individuals are involved in trade. The people have a reputation for hard work and honesty. The British during their occupation of Burma saw the Daingnet as reliable allies.

Housing

The Housing in Daingnet culture is identical to that of the Rakhine.

Food

Hot curries and spicy dishes are very much part of the Daingnet culture and food in their villages has a distinct Indian flavor to it.

National Dress

The dress of the Daingnet people is indistinguishable from that of the Rakhine.

Festivals

The Daingnet celebrate all Buddhist holidays in Myanmar (Burma). No particular additional festivals have been recorded at this point.
